Hummingbirds In Our Backyard

Anna's Hummingbirds arrived in May when there weren't enough flowers. Then came Black-Chinned and Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds, and now the Rufous-Tailed Hummingbirds have arrived. We make Hummingbird Nectar to supplement their insect and flower nectar diet.  It's easy to make at home. Dissolve 1 cup of white sugar with 4 cups of water.  Bring mixture to a boil, let cool, put in clean hummingbird feeders (clean well each time you fill feeders, add a tablespoon of bleach to dishwater to sterilize,  rinse well).  Change the solution weekly, if not more frequently, especially in hot weather.  No honey!  No food coloring!

  1. Very cool little birds aren't they. They are quite tough too and fight for their territory even against bigger birds.
Glad they come back each year.

  2. No hummers here this year. We only have the ruby throated variety.
